Building a New Generation of Schools
'Seroond' means 'generation' in Armenian—and true to its name, this program is about building a new generation of schools that can power the future of our nation.
The Challenge: Schools Left Behind
Too many schools in Armenia, especially in rural areas, struggle with declining enrollment, outdated methods, and low morale. Talented students often leave for the capital if they can, and those who stay behind don't get the opportunities they deserve.
We asked ourselves a bold question:
What if a struggling public school could be transformed into a model of excellence? What if that example could then be replicated all over the country?
Seroond is our answer—a comprehensive turnaround model that treats a school as an ecosystem of leadership.
No school is beyond saving; with the right intervention, any school can become great.
Our Theory of Change: Ignite Leadership at Every Level
To transform a school, you must ignite leadership at every level within it. By aligning these three levels, Seroond creates a synergy—a virtuous cycle where motivated students inspire teachers, empowered teachers support one another, and an effective principal champions the whole team.
Student Leadership
Students aren't just learners; they must be empowered as leaders and changemakers in their community. Seroond schools infuse student leadership development into the curriculum (via our Change-Based Learning projects and focus on teamwork, problem-solving, initiative). Students drive community service projects, take on roles in school decision-making, and are constantly challenged to think critically and act responsibly. When students take ownership of their learning and environment, magic happens—they gain confidence, and the school's culture shifts to one of possibility and pride.
Teacher Leadership
We work with existing teachers in the school, inviting those eager to grow to become 'Seroond Teachers.' Through a 2-year training and coaching program, these teachers learn new pedagogical techniques, adopt a growth mindset, and commit to a new vision for their school. We also embed Teach For Armenia alumni in the school as teacher-coaches—fresh energy and ideas on staff who support colleagues in implementing new practices (project-based learning, technology integration, etc.). Teachers evolve from lecturers to mentors and innovators in their classrooms.
School Leadership (Principal & Administration)
We engage the school's principal and administration as key drivers of change. Seroond only works in schools where leadership is open-minded and committed. In partnership with regional education authorities, we place a Seroond Leadership Development Manager on site—essentially a full-time project manager for the school's turnaround, who works hand-in-hand with the principal. This person coordinates all aspects of the program, collects data, troubleshoots issues, and ensures the principal and teachers have the support they need. The principal is coached to think strategically, build a positive culture, and engage parents and the community in the school's revival.
